Staying Safe from Tech Support Scams
Oct 22, 2024
Tech support scams are a common type of imposter scam. In these scenarios, someone will pretend to be a tech support representative to trick a victim into giving them money or personal information.
An imposter scammer may call, text or email to convince you they are someone in authority. They may even use caller ID to make it look like they are calling from an official government or business' number. To commit identity theft, they try to get you to send money or a gift card or share personal information.
How to protect yourself:
- If a pop-up or error message appears with a phone number, don’t call the number.
- Never share sensitive information like your Social Security number, bank account information, or passwords over the phone or through a website unless you're sure of the recipient's identity.
- Avoid payments through alternative systems. Scammers often request payment through wire transfers, crypto assets, prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or by mailing cash.
