10 Common Tax Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Whether you’re filing for the first time, entering a new tax bracket or working with similar details from last year – there’s always room for tax filing errors. Thankfully, Rally’s financial wellness partner Green Path is here with a cheat sheet of common issues – and the best ways to resolve them.

1. Wrong Numbers:

Before you submit, double-check SSNs, income and bank details. Typos can delay refunds.

2. Missing or Incorrect Forms:

Forgot a 1099 or Schedule? File Form 1040-X to amend your return.

3. Dependent Dilemmas:

Review IRS rules. If you claimed someone incorrectly, file an amended return.

4. Credit Confusion:

Misreported EITC or Child Tax Credit? Confirm eligibility and correct with Form 1040-X.

5. Unreported Income:

Freelance or gig work counts! If the IRS flags it (CP2000), respond quickly.

6. Taxable Social Security Mistakes:

Use the IRS worksheet to recalculate. Amend if needed.

7. Math Errors:

E-file to reduce mistakes – software catches most of them.

8. Unsigned Paper Return:

Simply sign and resubmit. No signature = no processing.

9. Wrong Mailing Address:

Use the correct IRS address from IRS.gov – or e-file to avoid this entirely.

10. Incorrect Direct Deposit Info:

Triple-check routing/account numbers. Wrong information can send your return to the wrong person.
